Maria Wilke hóf nýverið doktorsnám við skólann og er hún einnig fyrsti doktorsneminn í skipulagsfræði við skólann. Maria vinnur við verkefnið Sjálfbærar strandir e. Resilient Sustainable Coasts (COAST) við fagdeild Skipulags & hönnunar. --english below--
Maria kemur frá Þýskalandi og lauk meistaranámi sínu í Haf- og strandsvæðastjórnun við Háskólasetur Vestfjarða á Ísafirði 2019. Verkefni hennar bar titilinn „Samfélagsleg þátttaka í sjávar- og strand- og umhverfisfræðslu á Vestfjörðum og suðurhluta Nýja Sjálands“ e. “Community Involvement in Marine and Coastal Environmental Education in the Westfjords of Iceland and Southern New Zealand”. Bakgrunnur Maria er breiður og má nefna alþjóðlega ferðamálafræði og fjölmiðlun ásamt enskum bókmenntum, listum og kennslu en hún hefur m.a. starfað sem blaðamaður, leiðsögumaður, kennari og leiðbeinandi.
„Sem kennari og vísindamaður þá vil ég sameina vettvang menntunar og umhverfisvísinda til að stuðla að umhverfismenntun. Ég hef sérstakan áhuga á hafinu og að vinna með samfélögum við strandlengjuna með það að leiðarljósi að þau verði sterkari og geti betur tekist á við áskoranir af völdum loftslagsbreytinga og lítils pólitísks valds. Af þessum ástæðum laðaðist ég að COAST verkefninu sem leiddi mig að því að hefja doktorsnám mitt. Samstarfsaðilar okkar í Finnlandi, Norður Írlandi og Írlandi vinna allir með afskekktum strandsamfélögum til að bæta seiglu þeirra. Ég er mjög spennt að vinna með þeim og leggja mitt af mörkum en ég einbeiti mér að Vestfjörðunum hér á Íslandi“ segir Maria að lokum.

The first Planning PhD student at the Agricultural University of Iceland
Maria Wilke has begun her PhD studies with the Resilient Sustainable Coasts (COAST) project at the Faculty of Planning and Design. Maria is the first PhD student in Planning at the Agricultural University of Iceland. She comes from Germany and has completed her master’s degree in Coastal and Marine Resource Management at the University Centre of the Westfjords in Iceland in 2019. Her thesis was entitled “Community Involvement in Marine and Coastal Environmental Education in the Westfjords of Iceland and Southern New Zealand”. Maria´s background spans a wide field from International Tourism studies and journalism to English literature, art and teaching. Her studies have taken her to Germany, France, England, Wales, Scotland, Iceland and New Zealand. As well as studying, she has also worked as a journalist, guide, teacher and tutor.
“As a teacher and scientist, I would like to combine the fields of education and environmental science in order to contribute to environmental education. My special interest is the ocean and working with coastal communities to become more agent and resilient as they face many challenges from climate change to lack of political power. This is why the COAST project has inspired me to take up PhD studies. Our project partners in Finland, Ireland and Northern Ireland are all working with remote coastal communities to make a difference to their resilience. I am excited to work with them and to contribute with my own case study focussing on the Westfjords of Iceland” says Maria about the project.
