Last Thursday, November 6, the UNIgreen innovation cluster was formally opened at Hvanneyri. The opening took place in connection with the UNIgreen University Network, in which the Agricultural University of Iceland (LBHÍ) is an active participant.
With the establishment of the entrepreneurship cluster, West Iceland is directly connected to a powerful international collaboration of eight universities across Europe that focus on sustainable agriculture, biotechnology, and the food industry of the future.
The goal of the innovation cluster is to create a dynamic platform where ideas can develop into new projects and companies. Students, scientists, and entrepreneurs will gain access to facilities, guidance, and an international network to work on solutions related to agriculture, biotechnology, food security, and green energy.
The space itself, known as the UNIgreen Space, is situated in the heart of the LBHÍ main building in Hvanneyri. It will be the centre of UNIgreen projects, hosting short courses, receiving visiting scholars, and organising a variety of student-focused events.
However, the center is not only intended for the university residents. Residents of West Iceland are also welcome to bring their ideas there and receive assistance in further developing them. It offers consultation, access to equipment, and connections to experts both domestically and internationally, increasing people's opportunities to start their own companies or launch projects based on innovation and sustainability.
Gleipnir will be an active partner in the cluster's daily operations, providing entrepreneurs and projects with practical guidance, networking opportunities, and access to expertise, thereby accelerating the development of ideas into real, value-creating projects.
